Frequently Asked Questions
1
Does my child need Speech pathology?
If your child is hard to understand, not meeting speech or language milestones, has trouble following instructions, or struggles with social communication, it might be worth seeking an assessment. Trust your instincts—early support can make a big difference.
2
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed—you’re welcome to contact us directly to book an appointment.
3
What can I expect at my first appointment?
The first session is usually an assessment. At Hope for Kids, we will get to know your child through play and activities, ask questions about their development, and identify any areas where support may be helpful.
4
Is speech therapy covered by funding or rebates?
We see self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants. Medicare rebates may be available with a referral from a GP under specific plans, and private health insurance may also cover some services. We recommend checking with your provider to confirm eligibility.
5
Do you provide school appointments?
At this stage we provide in clinic and telehealth appointments only. Yet we are hoping to expand to provide appointments at preschools and schools in the near future. Please contact us to express your interest today!
6
Do speech pathologists only help with talking?
Not at all! They also support understanding language, social skills, literacy (reading and spelling), fluency (stuttering) and work closely with other allied health professionals such as Occupational therapists, Physiotherapists and Psychologists.
7
Can I stay during my child’s session?
Absolutely! Parent involvement is encouraged. Being part of the session helps you learn strategies to support your child at home.
8
How often will my child need sessions?
This depends on your child’s goals and needs. Many children attend weekly or fortnightly sessions, but this can be adjusted over time.
9
What can I do at home to help my child?
After each session, we will give you simple, practical strategies to use at home. Everyday moments—like mealtimes, play, and reading—are great opportunities to support your child’s communication.
10
How long will my child need therapy?
Every child is different. Some may only need a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support. We will work with you to create a plan that suits your child’s needs.
11
How long are sessions, and what do they cost?
Session length and fees can vary depending on the type of support your child needs. We offer a range of services, including individual therapy, assessments, and parent consultations. Get in touch with us to chat about your child, and we’ll be happy to guide you through the options and pricing.
12
What if my child is shy or doesn’t engage straight away?
That’s completely okay—and very common! At Hope for Kids, we take the time to build trust and connect with your child at their own pace. We follow your child’s interests and use fun, play-based activities to help them feel comfortable and confident during sessions.
